If Only I Were Wiser…

  October 4, 2003

If only I were wiser
I would know what to do exactly
And how to do it exactly
My hand would be sure and steady

If only I were taller
I could reach the skies above me
I could run my fingers through clouds
And pull on the braids of lightning

If only I saw farther
If the mists were to melt with sunlight
If the dancing shadows around me
Did not conceal pits and thistles

I would err on the side of reason
I would skirt the edges of mires
And I would not peer into darkness
Hesitating, looking for monsters.
