I’m a Wave!

  December 7, 2003

(translated from the Russian by author)

I’m a wave!
I roll humpbacked, pushed from behind by the hands
Of grey, stuttering wind.
Hail bombards me, the taut whips of rain tear into my skin,
I vomit up froth when my insides are sundered by bubbles
Rising from murky depths.
Surrounded by fellow waves, I shall reach
My destination and fall apart when my body
Crashes upon jagged faraway rocks.
Slowly, gracefully I shall slide into the deep
That threw me up to the surface, to the withering touch
Of wrathful, merciless skies.
I shall sink to the heart of the deep, where silence is king
And then perhaps realize:
I am water…
